LEAGUE FLAG UNFURLED AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE
FROM OUR STAFF CORRESPONDENT
Karachi, Aug 7. —More than 50,000 people, who in their enthusiasm broke several rings of police cordons, thronged Mauripur airport this evening to welcome the Governor-General designate of Pakistan, Mr. Jinnah. They came in cars, taxis, lorries, gharries and on cycles, while there were a few who came on foot.
The crowds at the airport had to be cordoned off in three sections, but a large number of police and Muslim National Guards were unable to check a surging mass of people, shouting slogans, as the Viceroy’s Dakota plane, carrying Mr. Jinnah, Miss Fatima Jinnah and two ADCs, landed.
Dressed in a cream-coloured silk sherwani, a shalwar and cap, Mr. Jinnah was greeted by the four members of the Pakistan Government who arrived yesterday, the Premier of Sind, other Ministers, the Mayor of Karachi and the Citizens’ Reception Committee.
Mr. Jinnah and his sister were profusely garlanded. A gesture by Mr. Jinnah which evoked great enthusiasm and was warmly appreciated was when, accompanied by Miss Jinnah and Mr. Yusuf Haroon, President of the Sind Provincial Muslim League, he walked round the airport and talked to the “people of Pakistan”, to quote his words.
Hundreds of cars formed a three-mile-long procession and followed Mr. Jinnah as he drove down a 15 mile route to Government House. The roads were lined with thousands of citizens, who waved League flags and shouted slogans.
At Government House, attended by two scarlet-robea Ordenes bearing silver maces, Mr. Jinnan inspected a guard of honour furnished by a company of the Baluch Regiment. As he stepped into Government house, after members of his household had been introduced, the Musim League flag was unfurled. All merchant and naval ships in Keamari Harbour were “dressed” for the occasion, while many buildings, omics and residences flew the Muslim League flag.
