LONDON – A rare edition of the first printed works of William Shakespeare made a brief appearance at the Globe Theatre here ahead of a sale next month where the book is expected to fetch up to $3 million.
The leather-bound, 1,000-page compilation of plays was made in 1623, seven years after Shakespeare’s death, and is known as the First Folio. Three other folios of the complete works followed, but are generally less valuable.
The folio will be sold at Christie’s, New York, on Oct. 8 to 9.
I said, “I believe the problem is that there are not enough profane words in the English language.”
“That’s true, so they must be used over and over again. A friend of mine once wrote a show with almost nothing but expletives in it. The cable audience seemed to like it. In ‘The Sopranos’ everyone, including the women, cusses. Why can’t we have the same freedom on network television? It’s not just the cursing but the violence and sexual mayhem that goes with it. I never use ‘%@&$ you’ unless it fits in the plot. If radio can use the words, why can’t network TV?”
“You’re not bothered that children hear cursing?”
“No, because most children are in bed by 8 o’clock.’
